Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that has been around for over 5,000 years. The practice is based on the theory that all living beings contain a life force, called “qi” (pronounced “chi”). Qi travels through the body through channels called meridians. When meridians get blocked due to stress, poor diet, lack of sleep and other factors, the result it disease.
By using small, sterile needles an acupuncturist can stimulate the flow of qi in certain parts of your body. The points are selected based on the problems a patient is having at the time. Since there are over 1,000 acupuncture points related to every major part of the body, acupuncture can be used to treat many different conditions such as:
- migraines and tension headaches
- common cold
- tennis elbow
- lower back pain
- weight loss
Acupuncture sessions last anywhere from thirty minutes to ninety minutes, depending on what the acupuncturist is treating.
